Can a Canadian Work In The US

One of the questions we are most commonly asked is whether a Canadian can work in the United States. The answer is yes, but like all foreign nationals they require a work visa in order to legally work in the United States.

There are a multitude of different types of United States work visas that Canadians can apply for. One of the most popular options is the TN visa, because a Canadian citizen can just apply for it at the border. But please don’t think that means that the TN visa is easy to obtain. When you apply at the border, you must ensure that the Treaty Officer reviewing your application is completely satisfied with your eligibility and supporting documentation. If they are not, you could be denied for the visa and have to return home.

Requirements for the TN Visa

Like all United States work visas, the requirements for the TN visa are very strict. You will need to obtain a job offer from a United States employer. However, that’s not all. This job offer must be in an occupation that is listed on the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) list of jobs that a TN visa can be for, which includes job titles like lawyer, doctor, scientist or engineer.

You must also be qualified for the job you have been offered and be able to demonstrate proof of this visa your education history, your work history, references and your resume.
